Daigo Kobayashi, a cellist, loses his job in a disbanded orchestra. Desperate for work, he responds to an ad for \"Departures\", assuming of a job in travel agency. Later he discovers that the job is actually for a \"Nokanshi\" or \"encoffineer,\" a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. Despite strong objections from his wife and his family, Daigo takes pride in his work. He learns the perfect art of being “Nokanshi”, a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and the family of the departed.
