2009

Welcome to the 11th Jakarta International Film Festival!

This year, JiFFest begins its second decade.

For the last decade, JiFFest has grown along with Indonesian film. From 4 in 1999 when JIFFest was held for the first time, the number has grown to around 100 by now. Since 2006, JIFFest has created its own Indonesian Feature Film Competition with foreign film professionals as juries.

JiFFest then grew into a showcase of Indonesian film development for international film industry. From visiting curators of worldwide film festivals, Indonesian films started gaining recognition in international level, as proven by 4 Indonesian films screened at Berlinale earlier this year. JiFFest’s own JiFFest Script Development Competition & Workshop (JSDC) has given birth to today’s best talents in filmmaking, such as Wahyu Aditya (2004), World Champion International Young Creative Entrepreneur of the Year (2007); Tumpal Tampubolon (2005), Asian Young Filmmakers Fellow Korea (2008); Salman Aristo (2006), writer of Ayat-Ayat Cinta (2007), Laskar Pelangi (2008) and Garuda Di Dadaku (2009); Yuli Andari Merdekaningtyas (2006), director of Suster Apung, winner of Eagle Awards Metro TV (2006), and many more.

Such achievement propels us to maintain our aim to be a platform of appreciating and getting education from films. We remain dedicated in bringing the best of worldwide films, including those from ASEAN, and Madani Film Festival, an Islamic themed program that we create together with rumahfilm.org, of which we will run the event as a separate festival next year.

However, more than film screenings, sidebar events in JIFFest often serve as alternative education in film education. Thus, the presence of Christian Scheurer (visual consultant for The Matrix) or Petr Lom who recorded Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad’s activities is something not to be missed. Both discussion panel on the topic of Film Promotion & Marketing and the launch of Amir Muhammad’s book “Yasmin Ahmad’s Films” are also worth attending.

At last, JIFFest is ready to start its journey this year. Starts in Belitong, the backdrop of our opening film SANG PEMIMPI, making a history as the first Indonesian film featured as JIFFest opening film, and ends in New York through our closing film, NEW YORK I LOVE YOU. In between the two, 25 countries are being represented in our selection of high quality films.

Welcome to JiFFest, welcome to Blitz Megaplex Grand Indonesia, the only screening venue for this year’s festival.

Have a good festival!
